In the old days when Tom Van Allen was wearing a cage chiseled out of mastadon bone, padlocks were the most popular option for securing a cage. And you still see many cages out there still using padlocks. But for the most part, the industry has moved on to barrel locks, usually inexpensive clones of the Burg-Wächter ME/2.
These locks are practically ubiquitous in chastity, so much so that I seem to have a drawer full of them.
They certainly have their advantages – they are small and allow for rather discrete cage designs.
But they are also terribly insecure.
How many times have I seen someone post “my key broke off in my lock and now I’ll be locked forever!”. Ugh. Even if it were true and not a fap post, that little brass lock is no significant impediment to getting out of a cage.
I got my first security screw with my Mature Metal Jail Bird (note: security screws aren’t simply Torx screws. They are unique to that cage’s artisan). The Jail Bird made that decision pretty easy as the other alternative was a padlock. At the time, I already had an association with the security screw as the more “serious” option. I think I had idea as you only saw security screws in the custom market.
But once I got the cage…
Looking down at your plastic Amazon starter cage and it’s little $5 brass lock does not convey any sort of finality. There’s the lock picking lawyer. There’s just buying another lock which will likely come with the same key. And it’s a $5 brass lock.
In my Jail Bird with its 3/8” 8 x 32 stainless steel security screw, a screw with no driver available – even a phone call to Mature Metal to get another would require my wife confirm we needed another driver – I felt truly locked screwed (sorry, couldn’t help it).
How locked am I? Drilling this thing is a far more serious proposition. And god, looking down at it… I remember when I first got my Jail Bird how much time I spent just looking at that screw.
Security screws have advantages and disadvantages vis-a-vis barrel locks; I’m not going to hash those out in this post. But I will say that wearing a steel or titanium cage with a security screw has a completely different feeling than wearing anything with that silly $5 brass lock.
